I watched this movie first as a child, it was hilarious then and is hilarious now.
The direction is priceless. The young son reflecting his nations Russian paranoia along with many of his elders in the village. The idea that a submarine officer would risk his boat just to look at America is far fetched but so what, it doesn't detract from the movies other playful interactions.
There are too many fun moments to repeat here and the ending is what we would all hope for, even the young anti Russian son comes along. I don't understand those who rate this movie low. It's not right. And of course this is Alan Atkins first important role.
