This movie is one of the best I’ve seen this year. Even if you’re not familiar with the Godzilla franchise it’s an amazing introduction to the franchise. It holds the perfect balance of seriousness, thriller, horror, even some laughs here and there, and is overall a well paced movie in terms of the story.
The characters in this movie are extremely likeable and sympathetic. Each one of them has their own unique personality and motivation in the story, and there’s no instance where dialogue feels boring or unnecessary. Everything feels like it just works with these characters, and they’re definitely a strong point in the narrative.
Godzilla himself doesn’t show up constantly, but I think that’s a good thing. Too much of something can throw off the pacing which is why I think it’s good that he isn’t present constantly. Every time he is on screen I was on the edge of my seat, he is portrayed perfectly. He genuinely feels like a force of nature that is fuelled by resent, anger, and pain. It feels as though he’s seeking revenge for what mankind did to him. In a way that makes him sympathetic, but you also can’t help but root for his downfall. Here, he is terrifying and part of what makes him so scary is the fact that you GENUINELY care about these peoples safety after getting to know them and see them rebuild their broken town, so when Godzilla comes ashore you can’t help but hope they make it out unscathed.
The soundtrack is incredible and is able to emotionally enhance every single scene where music is present. A song may elicit feelings of Hope, Dread, Sadness, Relief, or perhaps an emotion more obscure as everything is subjective when it comes to expression. The fact that it’s subjective makes the soundtrack that much more great because, depending on the person, views on how a song correlates to a scene will always differ, and I believe there’s a lot of beauty in that. Listening to the tracks alone can tell a story by itself without even needing the visuals of the movie, which I think is a sign of a well written soundtrack. The fact that you can feel so much power and emotion behind each song is something so indescribably poetic, especially when you watch the movie and see how much significance each song holds in the overall narrative.
Godzilla Minus One is one of my favourite movies of the year, and one of my favourite movies in general.
