I'm gonna start with Wendy: They tried to make her more of a heroine and "strong independent woman" type. This fell flat for me because it takes away from the whole purpose and point of Wendy and what she's supposed to be for Peter and the lost boys. In the original movie Wendy is more of a feminine and motherly type. She is exactly what the lost boys need because they never had mothers themselves and that was a huge important part of the story that was glossed over in this remake. When she sings her song in the animated version it was such a touching moment and that was utterly ruined by "I can't be your mother I don't even know if I want to be a mother" 🙄 I really don't get the recent trend where strong female characters can't be feminine??
Moving on to Peter Pan: So they basically took what was supposed to be this charismatic, mischievous, carefree, daring, free spirited character with a LOT of personality and turned him into some sad confused little boy that Wendy ultimately tried to save??? But couldn't? Also not to mention there was absolutely ZERO chemistry between the two at all.
Tinker Bell: Oh man was I disappointed!!! They took out all of her cool scenes from the original and made her more of a background character. Some may say she's jealous and problematic in the original but we all loved her anyway!!!! Is Disney afraid of creating dynamic, deep characters with flaws now? It's what made her so relatable in a way.
On Hook, Smee and the pirates: The whole dynamic between Hook and Smee wasn't there. Hook is more basic and less flamboyant. Also Smee doesn't have much personality either. They took away his goofiness and basically all the humor there. Also I hated all the back story with Hook and Peter. It really didn't need to be that deep.
The end: Oh man this was just bad. Peter Pan is supposed to represent the spirit of youth. He's timeless. And you're telling me he's just gonna go back to Neverland WITHOUT THE LOST BOYS... And be friends with Hook???? Extremely weird ending TBH.
I fully agree that the original had several problematic parts that didn't need to be replicated, but it's like they took the original story, gutted it, took away all of the personality, meaning and overarching themes and made it a shell of what it used to be.
