Nic Pizzolatto's gift is weaving a tapestry of mysterious crime drama and troubled souls striving mightily to redeem themselves, if unaware until they come up against a compelling but irascible partner with whom they share a genius for crime solving. Great drama. Challenging to the small minded. Revelatory to the open hearted.
The dynamic pairing of dissimilar detective partners is the hallmark of each season. Season 1, my personal favorite, McConaughey offers a superb characterization as the has-been detective-philosopher against Harrelson's conflicted, adulterous family man. (Certainly one of, if not McConaughey's best performances). A twisty plot keeps you engaged, ending in a nail-biting finish. Season 2 is getting a bad rap IMO. Nicely produced in a pseudo noir modern LA. Themes of murder, addiction and corrupt government officials play against each character's desperate need for brutal honesty to survive. A compelling drama plumbing the depths of personal trauma. Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams acquit themselves admirably (probably her best work ever). Season 3 hits the mark pairing Ali and Dorff. Truly a buddy picture. (Dorff's career best). Themes of marital strife, racism, aging and crushing family tragedy woven into a deftly handled whodunit traversing past/present/future timeline. And who doesn't love a bunch of racist crackers getting blown to pieces by a Claymore. Scoot Mcnairy proves once again he is a top notch character actor who's range knows no bounds.
