I spent much of the film thinking about walking out as it was pretty boring as drama. I love and know classical music but this film relegated it to a corner, which seemed odd in a film about someone who had chosen to make music the centre of their life.
I found Blanchett not quite convincing, I’m afraid: I could see her acting the part a lot of the time. And the role was one she’s pretty much done before.
I thought it was unfortunate that a film about that rarest of creatures, a female conductor of a major orchestra, should offer such a negative portrayal. I can understand why the conductor Marin Alsop, who is referred to in the film, wrote about how offended she was by the film.
