Great Film, but not for everyone.
If you were looking for a feature about Leonard Bernstein‘s career, you should pass. The film is not an event by event, depiction of Leonard Bernstein‘s life and how his career progressed. It is a look at the man and his relationships, both with his wife, and with other men. It deals with his love and passion for music.
Bradley Cooper’s portrayal of Leonard Bernstein is the best he has ever done. He will certainly be nominated for an Oscar. His imitation of Bernstein‘s mannerisms, and his spot on cover of his voice really show the man. We are fortunate to have an abundant amount of actual footage of Leonard Bernstein, especially during his children concerts that were shown on television, so the comparison is easy.
I took away a star for the sound, Bernstein‘s voice was very nasal. While it was performed excellently, the soundtrack didn’t pick it up very well so some of the dialogue was hard to follow.
This is definitely a film worth watching. Turn up the volume on your home theater Sound-system. This way, you’ll actually hear the dialogue and you’ll be blown away by the music scenes that are absolutely incredible.
