I vaguely remembered reading the book in school as a teenager but after watching this poignant love story surrounded by the realties of being a Black man in America, I must read again as a mature adult that can better understand the complexity of Black life in America.
What amazed me about the film is that the same atrocities are affecting families of color today. I think the harsh realities was tendered by the love felt for another.
As to the character of his mother, it was authentic of people who have so much difficulty dealing with life they put the entire responsibility on God which causes them to become detached & unemotionally involved. I loved the final prison scene that showcased forgiveness & acceptance.
Very well done. I think Mr. Baldwin would be proud.
