Although it is a slow beginning, the story develops on board the ship to Peking in 1903. The sinle lady, Mary, is travelling with a chaperone to marry an English man, Richard, who works in China but someone she hardly knows. Lots of detail about China and the completely different life from her life in Scotland. Their marriage is loveless and the birth of a daughter doesn't improve it. After a shocking affair, Mary leaves China for Japan. Well worth reading and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Tried to read this but gave up. It was a Book Group choice but most of our group couldn't read it. Sorry, but life is too short to spend hours trying to understand what this book was all about.

I found the book confusing, rambling, and boring. I can't believe it was shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize but my Reading Group was asked to read it so I persevered. I was hoping it would have insightful views on Alzheimers but I didn't learn anything new. The mother/daughter relationship was explored in great detail but I just found it very tedious. I still can't understand the point of the story.

Timothy Spall is excellent but the film was too slow and tedious for me. It depicted the overwhelming sadness after losing his wife, but I was frustrated with the lack of information about the marriage, reasons for the bus ride etc...
