This was a charming movie. We loved Diane Lane in it. But the movie should have had a different title, because the script departed in so many aspects from the book that it did not deserve the same title. In the book Ed and Frances restored the house as a joint project. Their relationship, the house, and the locals should have been the main characters of the movie also. At least that was my expectation. The script writer Audrey Wells took so much licence with the book, added so many characters and their trials to the movie, that book and movie don't really belong together. In my opinion without the link to the book the movie would have been much less successful. Jazzing up the story with so many extra characters and their experiences made the movie charming but put it firmly into the category of the romantic, very, very light foreign travel movies.
