I totally get the low ratings here, I do. The film makes the bizarre decision of wavering back and forth on the main character. She’s heinous for sure, dead in the eyes and pure evil. But then we are supposed to sit by as she is sympathetically portrayed as tough, smart, resilient, and protective of her girlfriend, the only person she cares for. It plays with themes of female empowerment, smart, tough women turning the tables on a system ruled by evil men (who are glamorized, lauded, rewarded). But shows these tough women winning by exploiting and enslaving even more vulnerable women! The elderly! Certainly the creators never expected anyone in the audience to have warm empathy for anyone who f*cks with living legend Dianne Wiest! ?!? I spent the first half relishing the moment DW gets her revenge and the last half preemptively getting p*ssed off and ready to write a bad review as it became clearer and clearer this villain was going to get away with it. But I survived and made it to the surprise double whammy ending and was actually quite satisfied with the poetic justice of it all. This is a darkly comic thriller where nobody comes off clean in the end and that’s just fine. Just watch it, you will ultimately enjoy.
