I have played Binding Blade, Blazing Blade, Sacred Stones, Shadow Dragon, Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, Awakening, All three Fates, Shadows of Valentia, Three Houses, and all of the spin off games. I can definitively say that this is Fire Emblem at its weakest.
It's no secret that Engage has a bad, contrived story reminiscent of Revelation, that's plain to see. The devs claimed however that the story is just a medium for which to give the amazing gameplay to the players. Yeah no, the gameplay is the weakest in the series too.
Take an already mind numbingly easy entry with incredibly short maps and casually add insanely op engage skills, what could go wrong?! Teleport across the map and attack in the same move, you go! Casually move 20 spaces, you can do that! Do an attack with 9 hits without relying on tiny astra rng, anything you want! HEAL YOUR ENTIRE TEAM TO MAX HP FROM ANY SPACE AND GET A FULL LEVEL UP FROM DOING SO, if it makes you happy and you don't even have to deal with fortify's terrible durability, it's permanent!
Like what happened to the series I loved? I was never huge fans of the Fates trilogy, but they were still alright games. This game is just one heaping dumpster fire of an experience that stomps all over the series I've been playing for nearly 20 years now! At least Fates had some genuinely good character interactions along with some interesting themes. Engage literally recycled almost every aspect of its story from past games. But rather than feeling like an ode to the series, it feels like a mockery!
I'm honestly still not convinced that this game was a massive prank a side team worked on with the real next main series game soon to release.
