It sounded very caricaturish in the first place. And almost offensive- seen from a South Indian perspective. The movie is somehow not about Shakuntala the calculator genius or Astrologer or Gay rights advocate, but about- Shakuntala the self obsessed, bad-mother, careerist, egotist, one who realised her mistakes very late in life.
One is left to wonder how much of it is real Shakuntala.
