It seems to me the casting is all wrong. When I read the book Charlie Croker wad this bull of a man, not Jeff Daniels. The ex-wife was described as "fat", hardly what Diane Lane is. Just those choices disappointed me. So many of the characters were completely changed from the book. Roger White didn't work for Charlie Croker. Conrad was white and lived in Oakland. Conrad's wife did not work for Croker. The mayoral race was between 2 black candidates, with both trying to appease their black constituents. And Peepgrass was not nearly as important in the book. I made sure to finish the novel before I watched this series. Once I started watching I sincerely wondered if whoever wrote the screenplay even read the book. And where were Conrad's Suicide Freezer unit buddies? And the actor was far too black to play Roger Too White. I just can't believe how this series massacred a great story from Tom Wolfe.
