There are pros and cons for each of the elements of the series, but for me the one totally overriding fault is the PACE. It is SO SLOW. Every scene is milked until it is squeezed dry. Same with the music, if you can call it that. Repetitious to the extreme. It’s almost as if the director was in love with each scene and let each linger so that we could fully appreciate it. There are valid reasons to linger when looking at a Rembrandt or Van Gogh masterpiece. There are none for this series. That said, there is some terrific acting though it’s a shame that Sam Neill only appeared in the very first episode. I guess that was to lure us in. Too bad.

A wonderfully moving film and a tribute to the power of the human spirit. I never got to know my father’s five sisters, their husbands, and all but one cousin (who was hidden) when they were taken from the Warsaw Ghetto and murdered by the Nazis. Whenever documentaries about the concentration camps were aired on TV (especially in the 1950’s) my father would pull his chair close to the screen in hopes of seeing one or more of the Warsaw family. He never did.
