If you loved the 1961 original, your heart also might be open to this Spielberg-scale reimagining. Excellent performances, more genuine Latin flavor than the original, and the crumbling buildings on the Eve of one of NYC’s spates of”urban renewal” make for a poignant backdrop. Casting Chita Rivera in the shopkeeper’s role — in this telling, she’s a puertoriquena who actually married a gringo — was brilliant as well. And thank God they didn’t mess with the best score and songs in any show, ever. See it.
