Honestly this is the BEST live action Disney has done! It’s just like the story we all grew up loving with few added touches that give it that ‘new’ retelling feel. But in general I really appreciate the story being the same and not changed too much. Halle is perfect casting for Ariel, ‘Part of Your World’ was amazing to hear in theaters, but the song ‘For the First Time’ really stole my heart. I also think she captured Ariel’s good-natured, pure-hearted, and at times stubborn personality very well! I also loved Jonah as Eric, he too was perfect casting, very charming ! And his song ‘Wild Uncharted Waters’ was also a favorite of the new songs present in the movie. Sebastian unsurprisingly made me laugh a lot, and the ‘Under the Sea’ sequence was actually better than I expected ! I really liked seeing weirder sea creatures (like sea worms) wiggling around to the music. And Ursula, AH I loved Melissa’s version of ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’, and her line delivery in general was spot on. My only criticisms are that, I wish we had a song for Ariel’s sisters and more of Flounder. For me, these didn’t take away how great the movie was, but definitely would’ve made it even better! I think if you really like the animated Little Mermaid, or just really like fairytales in general, you’d enjoy this live action. It’s obviously not visually the same, but these changes merge fantasy and reality! And are breathtaking in a very real sense. I usually am a bit more disappointed in the recent Disney live actions. But this one really pulled through in changing that. Will be seeing it at least two more times!!! And re-watching the animated classic right after, everytime.
