I enjoyed the movie but felt it was uneven. Thoroughly enjoyed Danielle Brookes whenever she was on screen; the true gem of this movie!! Her performance, to me, is Oscar worthy. I was pleasantly surprised with Fantasia's acting. Teraji Henson is always amazing on screen and her voice was a surprise! The Father/Daughter storyline was far too underdeveloped and possibly should have been jettisoned for the film. Although beautifully filmed, I thought the "beach scenes" were unrealistic and seemed odd and out of place. I really missed the Church ladies from the stage production. They always added that touch of levity necessary for the otherwise harsh reality of Celie's situation. Overall, I enjoyed the film but felt it needed a stronger directorial hand for a major motion picture!
