Script was not adequately edited. Too long and ponderous with excessive focus on irrelevant details that did not support the plot or were pointlessly distracting. Lots of tangential storylines that fizzled out and felt gratuitous and bolted on and did not contribute to the actual story. Climax scene was a too-brief, watered down nothing-burger.
That said, it was refreshing to see an original sincere movie that depicted actual human beings talking to one another— what a novelty these days! The movie had many amusing and interesting scenes and also achieved outstanding set and prop accuracy in its depiction of life in New England in the very early 1970s. It seemed very realistic, and was enjoyable and thought-provoking overall. A good choice for a benign, reassuring movie to watch if you have time to kill and are feeling patient.
