Really great movie! The concept was great and all the creatures were incredibly colorful and captivating. The characters were super fun too. I really enjoyed their face designs since it felt like some of the newer disney movies like Soul or Turning Red. It wasnt an incredible movie that was ground shaking or moving. It was cute and a fun watch especially for kids. I would definitely watch it again.
Most of the negative reviews are relating to the fact that Ethan Clade is gay. His attraction to his friend has absolutely no impact on the movie. There is a scene where Ethan is talking to his friends and his crush happens to be there but he trys to play it cool. His dad comes in and Ethan feels embarrassed because Searcher (the dad) is telling the crush how amazing Ethan is as a farmer and as a person. I think most people have had their parent unintentionally embarrass them like that which was super cute and funny.
Its likely the same scenario of the parent trying to befriend their childs crush would have been better received if Ethan was straight. Lots of people forget that being straight is also a sexuality. Being husband and wife is also a type of relationship the kids see in all kinds of media. Every romance story that disney has put out has shown a straight couple. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with sharing that space with people who are different than you.
Kids like Ethan will see that and feel seen. Being shunned or dismissed or treated like something is inherently wrong with you is something no one, especially not kids who are only starting to learn who they are and where they fit, should feel.
i think sometimes people dont put themselves in others shoes or dont allow there to be space for understanding. Everyone has a biased point of view and it only take an open mind and some listening to gain a new perspective. We are all trying to navigate the confusion that is life.
