I was looking forward to seeing this more modern approach to the Du Maurier classic but was disappointed by the lack of atmosphere. It would have worked better as a 'film noir', if it had had a better cast (specially Armie Hammer... dreadfully miscast) and an infinitely better script! Lily James held her own and elicited some sympathy towards her plight, although the chemistry beyween them was non-existent! The star of the show for me was Kristin Scott Thomas. She played the infamous Mrs Danvers with an understated menace, appearing out of the shadows when least
expected, avoiding the stereotypical. Comparisons with the original are inevitable. I preferred Sir Lawrence with his brooding melancholy, the mood was eerie and confusing., sadly lacking in this remake.
