A very odd film. Unfortunate waste of time. Also, very confusing. I'm not sure what was at stake? Any good conflict has high stakes, but what'd happen if the protagonists all failed? Does the world end?
The movie never tells you. The villain's goal is vague at best, and he's not scary, so it really doesn't feel like he needs to be stopped. For a movie about "real magic", they don't explain it. Why can only some people use it? Where does it come from? What are the rules of this world we've been introduced to? There are no answers. Clive Barker based this movie off a story featured in an anthology he authored, and it shows. The world is underdeveloped, things happen without explanation or context. It feels like the characters are all sharing a group hallucination while the world we know carries on, unaffected.
The movie fails in the fantasy category. It also fails in the horror department. At most, some scenes will just make you uncomfortable. The CG effects are laughable by 1995 standards, real eyesores. To top it all off, literally everything in this movie is dusty. Skip this film. Watch anything else.
TLDR: Confusing, disengaging, ugly to look at, apparently half-baked.
