It's okay. But a big disappointment compared to the first.
Putting Miles Morales in the spotlight was needed insanely. Starting the game is wonderful. The team have clearly taken a lot of consideration when it comes to making this game look as nice as possible. The environment vastly outshines the PS4 game with more realistic, alive and visually pleasing environments. the combat feels very polished in this game, which was one of my problems with the original. The original games' combat left a lot to be desired and felt rather dull at times. This game allows you to skillfully string together a lot of combos whilst maintaining your combo should you decide to get a bit adventurous with your play style. On top of this, the web slinging is hugely improved and feels one-to-one. This is nothing like the first game, in which the web slinging felt a bit clumsy and definitely did not respond well to inputs.
But now the elephant in the room. The story.
(SPOILERS AHEAD)
I was extremely disappointed with the story. Perhaps it's me being a fan of longer, more vast and complex plots. But the story in this felt extremely lack-luster and rushed. Miles and his Uncle felt like the only well written characters in this story. The mystery of the Tinkers' Identity was given away not even 90 minutes into my playthrough. And they're supposed to be the final boss. This already had me worrying for the length of the game. And the Tinkerer is without a doubt one of the worst villains, not only in a video game, but in a superhero franchise. This character was naught but the typical annoying "I'm not going to listen to anything logical because I'm strong and independent". Among this, her story is simply Cliché after Cliché. A barely fleshed out character like her didn't have me feeling pretty much anything when she ultimately sacrifices herself at the end. Which ultimately felt like they were trying to have some form of emotional impact on the player. And while it DID have me quite surprised (I will give the writers credit, I didn't see it coming), It was not much more than a "Oh". As opposed to the emotional response that the writers desperately tried to get out of the player at this point. With a good few appearances from some of our classic characters like Pete, Doc oc and Rhino, the story was just, okay. A collosal disappointment in reflection to the intricate, well thought out story of the PS4 game. The argument one could make is that this story is more direct and on a smaller scale that Pete, since it's obvious they tried to make Miles Morales very much a "Friendly Neighborhood spiderman". Which they accomplished l well. I'd argue that the story was far more deliberate than the first and while I did enjoy some of the Dialogue, that wasn't enough to save this clearly rushed and unfinished story. It felt like playing a DLC of the first game (Which the third DLC was a better story as a whole IMO). and for a the price of a full triple A title? Save your money. You'll get a few hours at most out of this. The generic fetch quests were somehow worse than the first game, so honestly. The three stars I'm giving this is for the visuals, great combat and charming Main character. Aside from that? Truly a real shame. Save your Money. Hopefully they do something better with this world next time.
