i don't understand all the flak this movie is getting. evidently, when the trailer and synopsis were released, pixar planned for this movie to be aimed for soon-to-be teenagers who are beginning to experience new things in life. hence the symbolism of many things in the movie, including discussions about entering adulthood. rating this movie with a 1-star review is irrelevant. that's like showing a 4-year-old an R-rated movie and rating it low because "it is not appropriate for children". regardless, even if you do show this movie to your 4-year-olds, i don't think the tiniest details in the movie are what they will care about, when the main protagonist is literally able to shapeshift into a huge, fluffy, red panda.
another thing: many people are calling this movie out for "oversexualization". of what, may i ask? anyone who watches a movie aimed for younger audiences who immediately nitpicks on the tiny details and flags anything remotely close as "sexual" are instigators themselves - complaining that media companies like disney and pixar are sexualizing everything when THEY'RE the ones over here saying that a dancing 13-year-old "gave them pedophile vibes".
regardless, the movie was fantastic. for a pixar movie, the animation is so whacky and cartoony - but that's a great thing because it fits the story so well. there are many funny scenes (i genuinely almost choked on my food), accompanied by emotional and tear-jerking scenes. even though the story was about a female teenager protagonist who is living in toronto with her cantonese family, i, an adult male, completely resonated with the movie. the deeper theme of trying your very best to gain approval from your parents is universal. the premise of experiencing newer things and growing up mirrors the story of Inside Out. tied in with themes talking about parent-child relationships, friends, bullying, and trying to fit in, the themes of this movie transcend the boundaries of age, race, language, and religion. i recommend this movie for all to watch and feel. this goes up to one of my top 5 pixar favourites of all time.
