I have never left a review for anything but as an avid book reader, I knew I had to.
I read both books almost a decade ago and LOVED THEM! It has been probably 3 years since I reread them, but I was instantly excited to watch the movie and had high hopes!
I was prepared to not see several scenes from the books and fully understand that not everything can be crammed into an 1 & 1/2- 2 hour movie but they DID NOT do this series justice!
There were times when the dialog felt awkward and corny. They missed SO MANY IMPORTANT scenes from the book. Then COMPLETELY changed the ending and the Las Vagas stuff. I was anticipating the scene where Travis came home with the 2 girls after drinking at the bar and then running out the next morning to buy all of Pidge's favorite foods. Or ANYTHING to do with the football players. Like Trav beating several up for making comments or when Abbs did $20 shots on her birthday and the players paid. None of that was in there.
Then there's the whole Parker thing. First, he was SO short lived they could have taken him out completely and it wouldn't have mattered. Secondly, they made him out to be a werido and everything about her relationship with him was forced and corny. It was like the whole movie was trying to be funny but it just wasn't. It felt like it was made by a man and he missed the mark trying to target the wrong audience.
They made Travis and Abbs out to be these two horn dogs that just HAD to give in to their temptations at every chance. And I really felt they missed the opportunity to show the over protective, I own you, personality of Trav. It's what made them such a co dependent destrutive couple.
They are not a couple you wanna aspire to be in the books. It's why we read about it instead of living it. The movie couple could be any horn dog teenagers.
The only redeeming factors were the 2 main actors and really more heavily Cole. I never thought of him as being the face of Travis Maddog Maddox but he does a great job! If I can look past the cheesy dialog I can see how he can embody Trav in every way possible.
Go watch the movie for yourself and then go reread the books out of pure frustration like I did.
