I grew up in the Doom era, fondly remembering trying to get the shareware version running and being utterly confused how to play at my tender age. Years go by, Shadow Warrior, duke nukem, hexen, quake, unreal tournament these all are given love.
But then I strayed. FPS was not to be my "git gud" genre (and really never will be). I moved into fighting games, competing against some of the best Australia has to offer in Tekken and Street Fighter.
Here we are present day, and I have dropped FG and rediscovered FPS starting with Siege and then trying the CODs and BF's. Love them all.
I had never tried the newer iterations of Doom, the last was Doom 2.
I had just bought a switch and other than the obligatory Overcooked 2 for some couch co-op with wife and in laws, I wasn't quite sure what else to get. My eye fell on doom and I given EB games return policy I thought why the hell not. Picked this up with Skyrim (another game I had never played... I know. Yes the cave has been cleaned out.)
What I experienced was so fun, so "roots" FPS, that even as a PC FPS gamer I wholy embraced this despite battling with controls slightly at the beginning.
The tell tale of my enjoyment with this is that I ended up also buying it for PC.
I won't go into too much detail on everything some other reviews cover the finer details but my breakdown is as follows:
SOUND: Appropriate metal riffs accompany this. I am a metal fan so this is icing on the cake, but Doom was never going to be played to anything else except metal anyway. Sound effects feel crunchy, demon roars are spot on. The directional sound is great (at least for me) and so far the voice acting has been high quality. I like Samuels voice in particular.
GRAPHICS: Having now seen the PC version (which I can run at 4k res with ultra a pretty solid 60fps) I am actually even more impressed with the switch as opposed to less. If your trying to do direct comparisons and telling me switch sucks in comparison, you probably also think competitive toilet pod sucking is cool. Of course the switch is going to have pop ups, of course the switch will look muddier and less defined. It's barely a fraction of the horsepower. That it actually looks as good as it does makes me want to buy Panic Buttons staff all a round or two of whatever they want. There might be other more graphically impressive games for switch but Doom is more than adequate.
GAMEPLAY: It's fast, it's simple. Yet there's also a bunch of unlocks, secrets, upgrades, lore, and glory kill angles to discover. I am enjoying it immensely, and I also love the level design, the ledge grab, double jump are so simple yet add a lot to how levels can be structured. This will remain in my switch until I 100% it. I have done a small bit of multiplayer to wet my feet, against bots and the bots on hard are not a joke. While they are slightly predictable in their movement, I.e they don't jump around or try quick peeks) they do a very decent job of providing a challenge.
BUY/BORROW/AVOID: 100% buy. If you really aren't an FPS guy/girl then maybe rent. I would even ask those who hate FPS to at least give it a try.
There's a ton to love about the Doom switch port.
The reason for 4/5 stars rather than 5 is because 5 implies absolute perfection, which obviously no game really is. However, this game is really a 4.5 our of 5. There's very little I could truly nitpick with it, knowing the kind of constraints the hardware itself limits it to, this is a very impressive port. Well done ID, Bethesda and in particular, Panic Button. You work miracles with ports.
