I was very excited to see one of my favorite books come to life, but the only thing that made this film tolerable to watch was Elle Fanning and Justice Smith. I know film adaptations never capture ALL the details from the books, if so they would probably be like 4 hours long. Therefore, I understand having to cut certain things out, but that does not mean to exclude the crucial parts of the story. I was definitely expecting more from this one. The movie was set off by the very first scene. Violet on the ledge of a bridge and Theodore finding her. Now for those who have read the book, you know that this is not how they were suppose to meet and even the diologue was altered. I continued to watch the film, hoping for more redeemable scenes. Although it is almost a 2 hr film, the scenes felt terse and very rushed. I did not get to see the full scope of theodore's character, which could have helped grasp the ending better (for those who haven't read the book). I think the abusive relationship between him and his father was very important to include! This would have given his character more roundness and more insight on how that has impacted his mentality. There was only a small conversation had between him and his sister about his dad, which doesn't really give much to the audience. It seems like they forgot that Theodore Finch is the protagonist, not Violet Markey. I prefer the adaptation of "The Sun is Also a Star" and they had a completely different ending. 3/5 stars for the attempt in capturing this book and in consideration for those who worked very hard on this production.

Firstly, Giving it 2 stars because there were quite a few laughable moments, but that’s about it. I’m a fan of cheesy rom-coms (Clueless, Pretty Woman, 13 Going on 30). However, I was not a huge fan of Emma’s character. SPOILER ALERT: There was a clear attraction from the beginning, yet both characters were too prideful to admit anything. Once Jackson (Luke Bracey) finally does, Sloane denies him! And she would have continued that way if her family didn’t convince her otherwise, at the end of the movie. I don’t mind the big corny “confess my feelings in public” scenario, I just don’t understand why he forgave her after the way she acted when he confessed his feelings (in a very cute way at the grocery store I might add). Don’t want to describe it as a “toxic” relationship, but it can surely lead up to that. Secondly, what’s up with the whole implied idea that a single person NEEDS to be in a relationship to be happy?? Lastly, being a 2020 movie, I think more viewers would have appreciated it if there was a LGBTQ couple thrown in there. There’s like 5 couples and they are all heterosexual.

I am shocked by the reviews on this film. These reviews praise a woman who flew to Italy 10 days before her wedding, lied and cheated on her fiancé. “Only You” is about a young, foolish, and selfish woman named Faith. She travels to Italy assuming she will find her destined true love named Damon Bradley, and that they will immediately recognize each other because they are fated to be together, lost soulmates etc. All this belief in fate, and yet she couldn’t recognize that a stranger had lied to her about his name (posing as Damon Bradley) just to get her in bed. She wholeheartedly believed that this man was Mr. Bradley, and so she was “in love” with him… until he revealed his real name. If you have any sense at all, then you’ll understand how irrational it is to chase a name in the pursuit of love. Turns out the man, Peter Wright, is just as delusional as her, falling in love with a woman with no regard of her character.
