I am a Christian. I love Rebecca St. James’ music. Her music along with those mentioned in the movie is what I grew up listening to. Now I am a huge fan of For King and Country! I have read the book “Behind the Lights” by Helen Smallbone. As a result, much of the story portrayed in the movie, I already knew. However, I knew there would be nuances in the movie that would make the story different. Considering we all have different perspectives.
A couple of specific things jumped out at me about this movie. The first thing, but not the most important is the theme of family. Without our family, who are we? How do we endure hardships? Who supports us through the hard times? Who cheers us on in the good times, when we reach our goals, when we are successful? Family should be the ones that accept you unconditionally! The Smallbone family was and isn’t perfect. But they did their best to love each other unconditionally, and to support each other, even when it was hard.
The other thing I noticed was they didn’t do things on their own. They accepted help from each other, neighbors, the church, friends, family and most importantly God. Sometimes people just do and we don’t have to ask. They see a need and provide. Other times, no one knows there is a need so we have to tell them or ask for help. This can feel so humiliating, but God wants us to humble ourselves. Which can mean asking others or Him for help. Ya know, God is our Heavenly Father, and like our Earthly Dad’s, He doesn’t want to watch us struggle when He knows He can help us. But He won’t force us to take His help. He wants us to ask. Some of the Smallbone family understood this pretty quick. Others it took a little longer to learn the concept.
My husband and I loved the movie! We highly recommend it. I am amazed at the incredible acting job Joel Smallbone did portraying his father. I can’t imagine how difficult that roll had to be!
Go see Unsung Hero!
