First of all this movie is not for everyone. I think the director took the movie trope of a older woman being a superhero and tried to make it fit today's superhero movie trends... but badly.
If you enjoy Marvel style action, with a bit of the LOKI multiverse mixed with the "weird parts" from Across the Universe, or The Science of Sleep, meets Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. Then you might enjoy this movie. If you do not know what any of these movies are and/or did not enjoy these films, then stay far away from this one.
This film has a scarce "mother reconnects with daughter, and rekindles her love for her husband" plot line that runs through the whole movie, mixed with a subplot of the mother, named Evelyn (Yeohs character) trying to finish her taxes and being audited by the IRS. The plot is lacking and takes a backstage role to all of the other action, and the supposed Marvel Lite multiverse, hard to follow plot of this movie.
I would have given this one star, however I enjoyed the creative and original aspects of this film. Not to mention the LGBTIA aspects of the daughter having a girlfriend and not a boyfriend, was refreshing. The trophy butt plugs were not, however, as enjoyable. But I understood how they fit into this films crazy plot.
Word of caution: see this solo before you decide to take a family member or significant other to see this film. No first dates. Unless you love absurd and out there films, that have a lot of sexul inuendos, then by all means see this film. If anything that I mentioned in this review does not sound like you'll enjoy it, then see something else.
Also I don't see where people get the reference to Soul or Turning Red, other than this family is Chinese and trying to fit into the neighborhood.
