Regardless of the criticism, which most of which was soooo harsh, with a few that were actually compassionately and validly constructive, "A Fall From Grace" is definitely worth watching -- I watched it last night and this morning.
Many critics wrote that Tyler Perry was, "again", writing about "sad Black women." Well, that is not what I got from this movie.
The title, alone, "A FALL FROM Grace," (emphasis added) validates what my perception of the movie was.
From the very beginning scene, the issue of TRUST was addressed and as the movie progressed, TRUST, again, was the ONE, recurrent message, to me, that dominated throughout -- TRUST of your instincts, TRUST of YOUR past life experiences as YOUR lessons, TRUST of people closest to YOU and most importantly, TRUST of God with YOU.
The road to even greater success for Tyler Perry and his movies: KEEP on making them! "Mistakes" MAY happen but so what! Mistakes are how we grow. Failure is in QUITTING. This movie VALIDATES for me -- NOT that I need validation, mind you -- to NEVER, EVER second guess yourself, your mind, your heart, your intellect, or your instructions from Father God. Never!
If Tyler Perry were to have listened from the very beginning to the critics about his dreams of making movies, he MAY have NEVER started or he may have gone to school, got in debt with student loans, walked around with a degree and having doors constantly slammed in his face from Hollywood about HIS ideas, or, even worse, having them STOLEN from him!
In Tyler Perry's "mistakes" about HIS dreams for HIS life in making movies, HIS bravery in TRUSTING Father God and HIMSELF has HIM successfully making HIS movies, in HIS voice, on HIS studio lots that HE bought and still own, AND getting them to the movie screens and now Netflix. We all know the name Tyler Perry but I cannot even think of a PRESENT movie critic's name.
Lastly, KUDOS to YOU Tamron Hall for eloquently letting Phylicia Rashad KNOW that she "checked" you and your sticking to it when she repeatedly -- through thinly veiled acting -- tried to deny it! I FELT IT! So glad that you, without saying it, let her know that YOUR EXPERIENCE as a reporter "know when I've been checked." CHECKMATE! That was an intense moment that I just could not understand WHY she would come for YOU like that! Of all people, you are and were to them full of love and positivity! Phylicia's role in "A Fall From Grace" was so dark from what we saw in past TV and movies that it was INCREDULOUS to see her as this character Sarah is ALL that you were saying. Yes, Phylicia stated that she plays dark roles on stage BUT the majority of tv audiences and movie goers have not seen her stage roles, including myself!
"A Fall From Grace," in all its "flaws", gave more exposure to actors for diversity of roles and took them out of the typecasted eye of Hollywood. Tyler Perry is a good, God-fearing man -- look at the doors he has opened; look at the company he has attracted and keeps; look at the lessons he has, probably unknowingly, given; look at the blessings of abundance given to him that he SHARES!
Thank you, Tyler Perry, for the INSPIRATION to "fail" while on the path to and of "success."
