I thought it was an enjoyable movie. I liked the cartoon in the late 90s/early 2000s and was always disappointed that it never had a longer life. I love the 2nd Toy Story Game - it still plays wells. And I love Toy Story. So I was excited to see what they would do with this.
It isn't the best of anything I've seen, but it was enjoyable and over all clever. I thought how they showed an impulsive and stuborn Buzz slowly mature and heal was great. The therapy cat was funny. The extra characters towards the end could feel a little like JarJar Binks at times. I think it is hard to have comedic characters not just drain an entire scene. Especially when the beginning had such a serious tone. The tonal change from act 1 (as an animated sci-fi action flick) to act 3 - I'm not actually sure how acts work, (a comedic sci-fi buddy cop movie) was okay.
And the plot twist villain was unexpected to me. But ends kind of flat. Wish it was explored more.
Anyways, an enjoyable film for an afternoon.
And yes, if you are against gay couples being depicted on screen, you should probably avoid it. That being said, I thought they did a wonderful job depicting the relationship, and how life continues on even in dire situtions - like being stranded on an alien planet.
