*SPOILER WARNING*
I honestly didn’t like this book, though I do think you should look into the series if you’re considering it. Wings of Fire in general is a lot of fun.
The fact that the majority of it was dealing with the refugees and just setting up for boom 15 already made it boring, but then there was the choice to redeem our protagonist, Snowfall, by LITERALLY MAKING HER BECOME DIFFERENT PEOPLE. It not only was a cheap way to redeem her but also outright horrifying; there were times she woke up still thinking she was other dragons and had their lingering feelings within her. Something very similar (being transformed and brainwashed into being another dragon) was done to two of her cousins 7 books ago and it was treated as horrible, so why it’s treated as 100% okay here is beyond me.
Her being racist was also partially blamed on a magical tiara, which was kinda weird.
Finally, in this book we learned why animus magic has stopped working. The reason? It has literally ceased to exist now and forever because of Jerboa II. I personally found this to be a terrible move because 2/3rds of the remaining animus dragons had already cast spells on themselves to keep their power from ever being abused. One of them was canonically prevented from CURING SOMEONE’S BLINDNESS because of Jerboa. Beyond canon issues, this literally wiped out a massive part of the books to avoid plot convenience when it was a big player in the previous arc. It feels awful to have a significant factor of the world of Wings of Fire just dropped.
I won’t give it anything lower than a 2 because it does what it set out to do, but I don’t like what was done. Regardless, I still say that you should read the books if you’re considering it. Most of them really are good.
