good graphics, good story and well-crafted atmosphere gives this game bonus points, but it loses two stars on a snail's-pace combat and useless melee characters.
The only way to get anything done is with the mage/archer/hammer, choose anything else and get ready for the most painful 15 minutes of your life (if you even survive that long). The melee range is a JOKE. You have to be making out with the enemy to hit it, and dont even get me started with Kevin's useless skills. I tried playing him several times and just can't get over how little crowd control ability he has, at least other Melee characters have an AoE. Joey's range, high max HP and DEF make him the most palatable melee character, he requires some timing since his swings are relatively slow though. But every melee is slow here anyways, might as well get some range instead of suffering with john/mark.
Even using the mage and the archer, the combat gets stale surprisingly quick. I'm finished with the first big area and already sick of the monotone gameplay. For a roguelike, this combat is mind-numbingly slow and repetitive. No really surprising mechanics or cool skills, just press attack button and run around getting to the next area. The point of roguelikes is that, because you restart at every death, the combat is so fun you don't even mind beating up the same 5 dudes over and over - Children of Morta doesn't manage to strike this balance for me.
