(This book was a gift.) I saw the reviews on the cover and thought “Are we reading the same book here??”. I wondered if this was aimed at children who enjoy sending and reading infantile texts, though that in itself is baffling as adolescent chavs are unlikely to have heard of the source material, let alone have read it. A puerile concept, let’s be honest. Disappointed that literary critics are not against the dumbing down of the quality of recent publications and even go so far as to praise the mocking of classics. If you want witty and funny then try Fielding, Dickens, Amis, Pratchett etc; the list is huge (but doesn’t include ortberg). Unbelievably bad.
