Inside is a theatrical masterpiece. I grew up with Bo’s humor through my teenage years and frankly this is his best work. First, the subject matter. We get to see a slice of Bo’s life during the pandemic. At first the music is quickly bouncing between various humorous subjects, however by the second act, the mood and subject matter changes as the pandemic wears on. He begins to discuss his mental health and the drain 2020 is having on him. The show reaches its climax in “All Eyes On Me” and is possibly his best song.
His cinematography is wonderful, making smart use of shape, space, color and body language. It is in all ways a piece of theatre, smartly executed and well done, the difficult subject matter punctuated by punchy humor that millennials and Gen Z can understand.
