If you're reading this before watching the movie then don't read any further!
Personally, I was expecting more. This is the new matriarch of the marvel universe. I hear people talking about it being an origin story but Iron Man was an origin story. Thor was an origin story. Captain America was an origin story. This was an insult to marvel fans.
Don't get me wrong, it's watchable. I'm as big a geek as the next fan and I enjoyed the Nicholas Joseph Fury backstory and the flurkin but that's probably some of the only highlights of the movie. Coupled with a catchy girl power soundtrack - I do love Gwen Stefani and the rest of the early 90s tunes but the movie just lacked any depth.
The relationship between Carol Danvers and Lashana Lynch could've been explored more. Some more involvement from Ronan the accuser could've been introduced. The tesseract history could've been explored. However, it wasn't and I was left unsatisfied - just like I was when I ordered the large popcorn and discovered half way through it was soft and mushy.
This is a girl power movie. I get that MCU wants to change direction and become more inclusive but they're doing it at the expense of what's core about the MCU. Honestly, I'd say the one of the best scenes is at the end of the movie when she gets introduced to the surviving avengers.
Overall, I'm just glad I've only got a month to wait until the real movie comes out (endgame). This was an acceptable, safe and uninspiring starter - I'm expecting the main course next month to make me happy again!
