The Tale of Despereaux is a beautiful book. It's not just about a simple mouse. It's a complex story with many different levels, but somehow, Kate DiCamillo writes in such a way that it's easy to understand. It starts with the introduction of an out-of-the-ordinary mouse, which then glides over to the perspective a rat in a dungeon that just wants light, which then transitions to the perspective of a young girl who has been sold for nothing but a tablecloth, ten cigarettes, and a hen. They all soon meet by destiny and voila. You have a story. It's gripping, and pulling you into the story. I'm not surprised why it won a Newberry Medal.
