Getting into the movie, I could already tell the critique the film would get from certain groups for projecting ‘feminist propaganda’. Upon reading the reviews, I couldn’t have been more right.
The fact is, the film does a masterful job at depicting the complex dynamics of when the roles of a typical hetrosexual relationship are reversed. It challenges gender norms, accurately potraying how most men would emotionally act when their female partners are the ones significantly better off.
Finishing this movie had me realizing how deep gender roles have been entrenched into society. Even as a woman, I could not help but feel guilty for Luke for being professionally lesser than his fiancee. When in fact, Emily and women alike should not be obligated to cater to any of their partner’s ego just for being successful.
That final scene when Emily forces Luke to come to terms to his inferiority could not have been done better. Admittedly, I was taken aback at her burst of violence at first; But it took me not long to understand its necessity to make him own up to his actions and emotions, with Emily finally disregarding all self-control and going to extreme measures to do so.
