This is without doubt a film that is close to perfection. The direction of Joseph L Mankiewicz is as good as it gets combined with Bernerd Hermans heartwarming emotional musical score.It sit's comfortably at number 5 on my all time favourite film list. If i was ever asked by a young person to recommend the 3 best classic film's of the golden era they would be The Ghost and Mrs Muir Scaramouche and Roman Holiday

Never before have i seen a war film depicted so well and yet so subtly. Proven beyond doubt that you DO NOT need overwhelming special effects, the big win here is purely........ the use of the camera. Panning 360 degrees, encapsulating the vast landscape, seen forward in the shot then seen behind where the scene had come from. GENIUS.
