Effects, cinematography and acting are all really great. If you have never read the books, you are going to love it.
If you have read the books...oh boy, are you going to be shocked at the complete and often times bizarre departures from the plot of the novels:
Spoilers:
1) Perrin has a pregnant wife... okay... and he accidentally kills her in the first episode! WHAT! WHY? For what purpose?! He doesnt even seem particularly upset about it in the episodes following this. Book Perrin would have been nigh suicidal if something like this had happened to him. It's a bizarre, upsetting and seemingly pointless addition. You do not need to manufacture drama or conflict in these books.
2) Egwene and Rand have consumated a sexual relationship by the first episode already. The show runners clearly do not understand or know what Rand and Egwene's relationship is supposed to be or become. Them sleeping together completely defeats the purpose of their longing for each other and subsequent estrangement from romantic desire for each other into something more platonic but more interesting.
3) Nynaeve is captured by trollocs... which she escapes... oh and she is killing trollocs in melee combat... which is just...weird and sneaks up on Lan and threatens to cut his throat...she isn't with the company when they enter Shadar Logoth... her arc from the books is entirely distorted.
4) Lan and Moraine bath together... it's weird.
5) Apparently the Dragon can be a woman? I understand we want to be inclusive and progressive and I am fine with that... but the whole problem of the dragon is that he will be a man...he will go crazy... he is going to be a threat as well as a saviour. If the Dragon might be Egwene or whatever... then there really isn't a problem. She will become an Aes Sedai, save the world and never have to deal with madness at all... It's a huge and unnecessary departure from the novels. I have a terrible sense that the show runners want to change who the Dragon ends up being, and if they do it will just be doom for the series.
Other than that, the show is well made and exciting. I just wish they would cleave a little closer to the story as the books have it.
