There's some very campy moments in this series, but as a fan of the trilogy and appendices, there's a lot of payoff too. Most of the criticisms I've heard levelled at it could easily be applied to Peter Jackson's renditions too, which people seem to have strange nostalgia/amnesia about; the Hobbit trilogy in particular was a dumpster fire, just in case nobody remembers. It is just the material they are working with, epic angst-ridden fantasy laced with built worlds, lore, fully developed languages and aww-shucks hobbit moments. I'm just so happy to see these stories make it to the screen, and with such high production value, even when the characters do fall slightly flat.
