The PC port of Horizon Zero Dawn is a great way to experience the game. Despite a rough start most of the wrinkles have been ironed out. Like a few console games before it the PC version was a mess that had to be fixed but is now stable and enjoyable.
My time with HZD was frustrating at first. I was struggling to break 60 FPS and could not play more than an hour or two without a crash to desktop. I pushed on, however, because I remembered the game fondly from my play through on the PS4. It was taking a toll though and I was starting to question the logic behind porting it to PC at all.
Fortunately for me, and the PC gamer base as a whole, things got fixed after a few patches. With the latest patch (1.03 as of 9/4/2020) things have been stable and I experienced no crashes after playing for several hours. My frame rate has smoothed out considerably as well, rarely dropping below 60 FPS. My GTX 1080ti is getting a bit long in the tooth but I am happy to see that even at 1440p it is more than capable.
Horizon Zero Dawn is a game for those who love the feel of exploration, but also want a strong story to keep them moving forward. The vast and varied world the game is set in has a very believable sense of progression itself, but the story really keeps you going. Which is saying a lot for a game featuring robot dinosaurs.
The premise alone would have (and I suspect did) sold copies. Robots, awesome. Dinosaurs, awesome. Robot dinos, double awesome. That may seem like a strange point to start with but in a very real way it communicates the overall theme of Horizon Zero Dawn. This is a game that tries to make some sense of the things it introduces. This works well since no one but me was asking why the robots look like they do. Everyone else seemed satisfied with the fact that they are awesome. Just the fact that they took the time to answer a question few people were asking really speaks to how seriously Guerrilla Games took their new IP.
(Minor spoilers ahead)
The story here is presented in a variety of way, with most of it being presented as you progress but with a wealth of extras for those who want more. As you wander about the world you will find out a lot about the world that once was, or not, it is up to you. I really appreciate the little things, like ancient message that hinted at what life was like for the average person before the world ended.
HZD looked great on the PS4 and on the PC it is even better. While you will need some strong hardware to run it, the extras here are worth playing the game a second time if you have already played on the PS4. That is not to say the port is perfect, however. There are some issues, particularly with characters in cutscenes animating at 30fps even when the world is at 60. Still, an improvement overall to be sure.
For those who did NOT play it on the PS4 now is your chance to play a fantastic title that really helped to define the PS4.
