I have seen both Shutter Island and this movie and I quite frankly, I prefer God's Crooked Lines a whole lot. I did not find the story predictable. Alicia's actress is outstanding and her character shows many strengths: extreme confidence, witty, very intuitive (the admitting Psychiatrist's lust for for her), determined, agressive and very convincing. The arial cinematography at the beginning is so typical of the Basque region, the setting in a dark dated asylum building, the intricate costumes... all add value to this movie. There is a confrontation of personalities between the Head Psychiatrist and the Protagonist that builds up throughout the story. The dialogue between the two is fascinating and culminates in the end with the unexpected "showing up" of a key character that we only meet at the beginning. Alicia's facial expression at his sight is one for the annals of cinema, at the level of the one ofJanet Lee's assault scene in the shower (Psycho). It is worth watching for that scene only; Alicia's disfigurement is a "tour de force" on the actress' part. I have highly recommended this movie (albeit longer than needed) and it hasn't disappointed anyone yet. An outstanding psycho-drama with a final scene twist... literally.
