It is decades since I read this book but I still remember it as an excellent piece of journalism written by someone close to some of the leading participants. Second only to "History of the Russian Revolution" by Leon Trotsky

Unusually for a work of history, it's a real page-turner and Trotsky's analytical approach as well as his wit leaps out of the pages. Reckoned by many, alongside Churchill's History of the Second World War as the best historical work written by a leading participant of the subject matter. Both authors ensure that their historical roles are not forgotten! :)
