Watched thangalan after a basic review : slow first half;grippy second half; dialogues that require sharp ears to understand and enjoy. These actually hold true. What is more is that Thangalan is a genre of its own. It has history; myth;folklore;suspense;thriller;social injustice and ... (Drum roll) Magic. Yet its engaging and keeps you guessing what's next. I am not sure if it was the visuals or the storyline that spans across times, it emulated a feeling that was close to what I felt when I had watched Darren Aronofskys 'The fountain'. This is a very different movie from Pa. Ranjith. I bet people would have gone expecting Bala's Paradesi and came out experiencing something similar to Selvaragavans ' Ayirathil oruvan. Some of the visuals were spectacular. Especially the climax scenes which switches between time and period. The final gold rush scene. Acting was also very good and convincing. Vikram is in a league of his own, supported by Parvathy and Pasupathi. Rest of the cast were also very good. This movie could have easily become what Selvaraghavan's Irandam Ulagam came to be: a head scratching misadventures that test the viewers patience and keep them scratching the head to the point of headache . Fortunately the execution,screenplay and acting has taken it in the right direction. Though it is very much possible it won't be enjoyable to people who are looking for an escape into movies for entertainment or feeling good or for laugh.

Semma Movie. After a long time I saw the theatre erupt into laughter, scene after scene. Very fresh and unique concept with a brilliant screenplay that has been brought to life by the director, cast and crew. SK and yogi babu combo reminded me of Arya/Udayanidhi with Sandhanam from recent times. BGM in last 20 min was riveting. A total family entertainer and a must watch.

The film stays true to its source material. Karthik stands out in the entire cast. His chemistry with Aishwarya Rai,jayaram and Trisha stands out.There are moments that gives one goosebumps and then there are moments that could have been but doesn't. For those who haven't read the book , the film may seem packed too much.Climax ends on a cliff hanger,that sets up the premise for next part. felt single screens dint do justice to the grandeur ,will watch once more in imax (once the ticket price come down). 3 hrs flies by like nothing.Definitely engaging and worth a watch.
