*SPOILERS*
Ok firstly!!
This film wasn't horrible..... and I do like Jordan Peele, I think he's a great comedian and his other films were certainly very original and interesting. There were some really good things about "NOPE", for instance: Peeles ability to create naturally flowing dialogue, authentic moments, his ability to create suspense and intrigue, his eye for composition and art direction, I mean he wrote a whole god dam movie (which is very hard i'm sure not a-lot of you have attempted that one).......
BUT!
It wasn't Fantastic! or great... or even worth calling good in my opinion. Let me expand.... I know this is a controversial opinion.
I thought there was potential at first, I mean the characters were a little basic, but kinda good basic.
There was a good setup with the protagonists personality and his motives/goals. OJ has a little problem not feeling like he can step up to the mark and take his dads place.. da da da.... Along the way we are introduced to our "antagonist" the UFO. It's running smoothly. Then...
I feel I got a little worried when we are introduced to our 3rd lead role, "angel". He seemed a bit white bread and for me he did not have enough motive or relevance to the story for him to end up being such a massive part in my opinion. Then we've got this little gordy background story which is cool, engaging and super erie.... and I do understand the essence behind it: Theme park owner (ricky) thinks he can tame a beast (the ufo) because he tamed one when he was young (the monkey) and we are referenced that theme when we learn about the UFO's territorial nature, But this wasn't obvious and this sentiment was hard to attach to during the film.
Then it all crumbles when they call up big shot director/camera man. Who takes their call and with little to know incentive, he thinks it's a good idea to go ahead and join them. After that I was a bit icked.
They proceed to set up this convoluted boobie trap for a flying saucer which eats people, one of their main motives being that they want to get a good "shot" of it. Which all seems a little far fetched to me. They're all willing to die to take some footage of this thing...
Then old mate director sacrifices himself, for no good reason.... Which made no sense to me. Like I get that he "wanted the perfect shot". but along with you dying is the destruction of the footage that you took..... Anyway, They have a couple more close calls w the UFO, it turns into its final form, which was interesting.
Then OJ's sister pulls of this last minute plan, unleashing the balloon, which flys into the sky, the UFO eats it and this kills it! There was no bread crumbs left to say that this was the plan, nothing eluded to any significance of the ballon, seemed out of place. BUT WAIT! just before this crescendo, she snaps a very low quality shot of the UFO flying in the air. Which is supposed to be their "proof" and one of the main motive's behind all this madness...... Tututut. Like anyone could whip that up on photo shot in 30s.
Nah not good enough. Sorry.
