MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD
As a Wanda fan, I came in very excited for MoM. The trailers depicted her as more heartbroken, reflecting what so many people loved about WandaVision, but, in this movie, that heartbreak suddenly turned to complete murderous hostility. I was hoping Wanda as a villain would be more complex, as she is ultimately just a woman who has faced so much grief but that wasn’t the case. The movie gave Scarlet Witch the “crazy woman” trope, which seemed lazy and corny. I will say however that Wanda was the highlight of the film. Olsen portrayed the character very well (as expected), especially in the (very few) moments where Wanda showed her grief. Personally, I wish we could’ve seen her power level be portrayed more than just murdering dozens of people, since it was revealed that she has very powerful reality warping abilities and is a Nexus Being.
In terms of the other characters, Doctor Strange didn’t hold much weight in this movie. Sure, he and his variants had many fight scenes and developed a friendly bond with America Chavez, but other than that he seemed more like a side character. America had a lot of potential but in the end she seemed more like a plot device. Her power was the only thing she had going for her.
I don’t really get why this movie needed to be a horror film. The horror elements took away from the already sloppy plot. I kept expecting there to be a redeeming plot twist but it was just 2 hours of quirky camera work, random action sequences, rushed scenes, poorly written characters, and a nearly non-existent plot. The movie wasn’t awful but it definitely was not great.
