This show is very one sided...it favors Mia. Mia is made into this hero, when she is more flawed than any of the other female characters. She comes into all of these women’s lives and shakes things up, but doesn’t really take any responsibility for any of it. I absolutely hate the way the writers made them into stereotypical characters. I wanted a more balanced and realistic interpretation of the women. Mia is so angry and bitter, but why? She needs help mentally because I could not understand her why for everything that she had going on? She does drugs in her home, makes her daughter move from place to place, sleep on floors, never buys her new clothing, lies and keeps secrets, and sleep/live in her car. She also has sex with some random stranger in front of her infant child in the car; she is a train wreck. She pretends to be poor, but when her Asian coworker needs help she goes out of her way to sell one of her pictures to support her. When her daughter needed more from her she pretended as if she could never afford to give her what she needed and/or wanted. Pearl really had no sense of normalcy. Please don’t get me started on other characters like Izzy. The writers made Elena’s children hate her when I felt that she sacrificed for them; they were so ungrateful. Everything was blamed on Elena and all of her choices. I’m not saying she was a great person but she didn’t deserve everything that happened to her on the show for season 1. I think that I will check out the actual book now. Well, that’s just my take on it; Hate it or love it!
