Edit: this is for the Core Rules, not the Playtest.
Let me get the this out of the way right up front, I really like this game. I think that the 616 resolution mechanic is actually far better in play than it has any business being (since it sounded like a pure gimmick when I heard it) and the flexibility of the system to cover different power levels (through their scaling tool, called ranks) is deceptively good. I’ve heard some complaints about the power list, but I don’t see what they are referring to. I can create nearly any major super hero property with what is provided in the book, with minimal creative interpretation required. What is even better, I don’t need to do any of that, because they have a veritable who’s who of the Marvel Universe in the pages of the core book. The ONLY thing that keeps this from being a 5 for me is that they didn’t include an introductory mission. I think with the likely target market including casuals that are fans of the IP, this is a real lost opportunity and will limit the penetration of this product from where it could be. That said, I have all I need right here in the Core Rulebook and will be running sandbox style games galore with this product. With 3 announced expansions and CMON handling the supplemental items, I hope that Marvel Multiverse RPG is going to have a long successful run… but even if it doesn’t, you have what you need RIGHT HERE, if you are an experienced gamer!
