I’m not a movie expert by any means but I will tell what I thought of it anyway.
First off Peter Jackson’s films will always be my favorite depiction of this fantasy world. There’s just something about the way he filmed them where he filmed them and the casts he picked where just the best at the time. The way he was able to bring the characters out of the pages and put them on the screen as emotional beings living in a fantasy world where theirs a darkness that seeks to overshadow everything.
Coming in to watching the Rings Of Power I thought I would have to try to ready myself to try to look at the characters, castles, races and just everything different. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that much of the tone in Peter Jackson’s films where in here. The beautifully epic scenes of the mountains and valleys and castles are done as though Peter Jackson himself directed it. The orcs look like the same and the elves get a visual upgrade in my opinion. The cast is great too. The woman who played Galadriel had my attention the whole time as she was very good at acting and just being in the screen frame! The watch guard elf who gets captured by the orcs is probably my favorite as he was very good and just fit right in to that role like a glove. Also it was nice to see a jacked elf for once. The dwarf caters and actresses where great as well and just once again stole the spotlight when it comes to humor and comedy but where also very emotionally driven.
These episodes on one side where enjoyable a good fantasy series full of well designed characters kingdoms and villains all seeking a home, power, love, or just straight up adventures. The leading hair foot in the series once again plays the “kid who never leaves the house” in these films and longs for adventure.
It’s getting old and I hope in season 2 we can see that battle against the goblin king that Gandalf was talking about to bilbo in the Hobbit.
Now on the flip side this movie has a very dark and much much more bloody tone then Peter Jackson’s . Yes yes Jackson had head’s being chopped off and legs and black orc guts flying into the camera and stuff like that but this series has multiple times where red blood is emphasized in the scene and the deaths of some of the characters seem to be more horror eye candy rather then just fantasy monster deaths. I liked it I guess but there where times I thought I was watching I fantasy horror flick.
Lastly and the main reason I didn’t like this series is the way they revealed souron. I know they where trying to humanize him and make him a character with a reason to turn dark but this is THE DARK LORD for heavens sake this is the home boy you didn’t want to mess around with back in 2001 where even Gandalf peed his pants at the sight of black speech! And here he is lying in a bed looking like a pouty prince with Galadriel looking over him like a mom saying “ it will be ok honey” I mean come on!!!!!!!
I’m sorry I guess I’m just a Peter Jackson’s Lotr guy but I mean….
