I really hope that its bots leaving all the good reviews for this.
I felt like Timothy had it in him to do the Wonka character justice, but that he had zero to work with in such hideously poor writing. The "Noodle" character felt super akward and cringe- starting with the name Noodle- then they even admitted in too long a scene how cringe it is. And there wasn't enough of an age gap between she and Wonka to not have it feel kind of predatory vs Wonka being like a big brother to her which is what I think they intended. Also wasn't a fan of Wonka being illiterate- too insulting to the source material.
It was also too dark. Literally and metaphorically. There were too many adversaries to the end of feeling overly hopeless. And the wasn't enough bright colorful candy scenes. The biggest one you get falls VERY flat as compared to the original chocolate room- there's zero sunlight showing off the sweets- and then all their hard work is immediately burnt down. This movie is far too stupid for adults to be able to enjoy and far too bleak and hopeless and depressing for young children to enjoy- little kids need a LOT more color and good cheer to hold thier attention than this movie offers- Wonka was made to seem more like a Mary Poppins type character magic wise in this but wasn't able to use that magic to make children smile and give them fun outings in the sunlight.
